I have to confess that I know very little about Feng Shui, but I am learning more and more from my reading of the fantastic articles by the many guest writers who are contributing to this blog. What an interesting subject it is!

It seems to me that I have read about something similar before, some years ago when I was investigating the phenomenon of the ley lines that cover the landscape of England. I came across the writings of an English author called John Michell. He compared the English ley lines with the system of flow lines in the landscape of ancient China. He drew some fascinating conclusions about it, and his works are still worthy of careful study.

These Chinese flow lines seem to be identical to the concepts of flow in Feng Shui studies. Feng shui is older than Confucianism and Taoism, and some of the tenets of those spiritual traditions were probably adapted from feng shui. Feng shui literally means wind and water. The ancient practitioners were the building scouts for groups of elite people. They searched for “the belly of the dragon” which were areas that were above flood plains and below strong winds, creating a balance of wind and water. The ancient feng shui masters would then guide the building of the home or the village in order to not disrupt the natural energy flow of the area. Feng shui masters in medieval China were only allowed to serve the elite classes and were punished for helping the commoners.

The next incarnation of feng shui relied on astronomy to find relationships between humans and the universe. It was used as a mode of gaining political power in ancient China. The ancient Chinese practioners used the celestial pole to determine the north-south axis of settlements and then used this measurement to determine the floor plan of their buildings. This technique was incorporated in the Shang palaces at Xiaotun, Yanshi, and Zhengzhou. In fact, all capital cities in China employed feng shui. The principles were recorded during the Zhou era in the Manual of Crafts and the Carpenter's Manual.

Early feng shui practices were kept secret from commoners. But in the Yellow Bandit Rebellion in 907 BC, it is believed that a feng shui master fled the palace and took refuge in the mountains. There he helped the poor by sharing his feng shui knowledge.

The first written proof of feng shui is thought to be from the East Han Dynasty, around 25 A.D. Since feng shui is centered on the balance of yin and yang, and this had its height of popularity between 770 B.C. and 475 B.C., many scholars believe that this best dates the origins of feng shui. However, other scholars look back to cave and tomb drawings that date back much farther as a clue to the approximate time feng shui began.

Feng shui gained popularity in America after Nixon’s historic visit in the 1970’s, which opened up a cultural exchange between the two countries. In the thirty years since, feng shui has made it into the popular culture consciousness and is widely practiced around the United States.

In Chinese Metaphysics, there are many types of systems and formulas. One of them is known as Flying Stars systems of Feng Shui. In this system, there are nine types of stars which are given numeral of 1 - 9. These stars are actually bodies of energy (also known as Qi) that moves within a property. In Feng Shui, a property is divided into nine equal sectors based on compass direction of North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest. The sector without any compass direction is the center. The distribution of Qi over these sectors demarcates the good and bad sectors therein and formed an energy pattern within a property. The energy pattern in a property will change from month to month and year to year as the stars fly from one sector to the other.

In Flying Stars Feng Shui, a property belonged to a period of time based on its facing direction. There are altogether nine periods and each period has 20 years based on the Chinese Solar Calendar. We are currently in period 8 which started in February 2004 and will last until February 2023. In each period, the nine flying stars are categorizes into good and bad stars. The good stars are deemed timely and will bring prosperity to residents of a property whereas the bad ones are considered untimely and become portents of misfortune. For this period, the few good stars are 8, 9 and 1. Star 8 is the current prosperity star whereas star 9 and 1 are future and distant prosperity stars respectively.

Star 8 is considered very auspicious as it is the ruling star of the period. It brings wealth, financial success, career advancement and prosperity to the residents when it flies into a given sector of a property. For example, star 8 occupies the East sector in the year 2008. A house with the main entrance in the East sector or a room in the East sector will be able to tap into the positive energy of this star and the residents will enjoy good luck in their endeavors.

Star 9 is deemed auspicious as it is the ruling star for the next period which will start from Feb 2023 onwards. This star brings future prosperity to the residents. A growing number of people across the nation are exploring the ancient art of Feng Shui as they design both interior and exterior spaces. This centuries-old practice involves using color, materials and object placement to enhance positive energy, or “Chi,” in homes and offices.

“People are often surprised at how incorporating Feng Shui into their design choices can have a positive impact on their lives,” says Linda Binns, executive director of the Feng Shui Success Institute and a certified Feng Shui practitioner. “By considering how various objects and colors affect the environment, we can direct energy to work for us in supporting our life goals.”

Binns notes that use of color is an important, but often overlooked, consideration in creating a space with plenty of positive energy. “There is a whole science that focuses on how color affects us. Certain colors are stimulating while other colors are calming,” she says. “We also have to bear in mind that the use of colors in one culture may be completely different in another.” For example, white is often a key color at weddings in Western cultures because it is symbolic of purity and new beginnings. However, in China white is associated with death and is worn at funerals. In India, red is the most prevalent wedding color.

Personal preference and cultural norms are important considerations when working with color in Feng Shui. Colors that have any sort of negative connotation for the building's occupants should be avoided in decorating. However, some general rules do apply when choosing colors for various parts of a home.

There are several ways to think about color in Feng Shui. The first is in terms of color's connection to the five elements - fire, earth, metal, wood and water. Feng Shui practitioners work to balance the presence of these elements in order to bring a sense of balance to a home, and each element is associated with specific colors. “We instinctively feel most comfortable when all elements are present in a room, often through a combination of using items that are composed of the elements themselves and using the colors that represent them,” Binns says.

The colors associated with each element are: red spectrum for fire; yellow, gold and earth tones for earth; white and pastels for metal; blue and green for wood; and black or very dark tones for water.

Binns advises her clients to make sure they do not overdo any one element in a particular space. For example, bathrooms, by their very nature, contain an abundance of water. Using black or very dark colors adds even more elemental water to the space, which can result in a sense of passive fluidity and lack of structure for the home's occupants.

Another example is the overuse of wood. Many new homes feature hardwood floors, which create an overabundance of wood when paired with wooden furniture, predominantly blue or green furnishings and lots of plants. Feng Shui practitioners warn that too much wood in a home can cause the occupants to feel overwhelmed. “Creating a good balance with all five of the elements will not only help us to feel better, it can help us to be more successful in life as well,” Binns says.

Another way to use color in Feng Shui is to focus on enhancing specific life areas with the colors that represent those areas. For this, practitioners use a “Bagua,” which is an energy layout of a space that identifies specific areas that correspond to various parts of the occupants' lives. (See illustration.)

Although each area of the Bagua corresponds to a complementary color, simply using one or more accents in the appropriate color may be enough to enhance the area and encourage the flow of Chi, Binns says. In fact, the best color choices often combine the personal favorites of the occupants with the colors used in Feng Shui.

When assessing spaces with Feng Shui in mind, it is also important to consider color choices in relation to a room's primary purpose. For example, adults' bedrooms are for rest and relaxation. Therefore, the best bedroom colors are calming, muted tones. Green and blue are good choices for children's bedrooms because these colors encourage growth and development. However, hyperactive children often do better in rooms that use earth tones and muted yellows, which have a grounding effect.

Red is often considered to be the color of choice for a “Feng Shui-friendly” space. But Binns cautions against tossing around too many red throw pillows. “It is true that red is often used in Feng Shui as an 'activating' color,” she says. “It is a high energy and very auspicious color and therefore may be recommended. But it's definitely not always the only option. For instance, you may have heard that it is good to have a red front door. This does not mean that you absolutely must have a red front door in order to create positive energy. Red may not be your favorite color and may not match the rest of the house.”

However, it is not a bad idea to have at least a splash of red by your main entrance. This can be achieved with red flowers, a welcome mat with red accents or a wreath with a red ribbon on the door. “Remember, the most important thing is personal preference when it comes to color - do not use a color that you do not like just because you think it would be 'good Feng Shui',” Binns says.

From ancient to modern times, many have theorized that energy flow is the key to human vitality and health. While China is not the only society that prescribes to this belief, the various energy-cultivating sciences from China have become some of the most popular in the world, as many are enamored with the notion of harnessing one's Chi power. While some may assume that chi is a mystical magical force, it is, in reality, the common life force that travels through all individuals although most have no idea how to tap into its energy.

Chi (also known as Qi) is the life energy that is promoted vigorously in a variety of Chinese healing arts. While most people realize this, many however, prescribe to a limited notion of how these arts promote and cultivate the flow of chi in a person's body. That is to say, many people assume inaccurately that the energy can only be cultivated through the practice of "chi power" oriented martial arts. While these arts most definitely promote the positive flow of chi, they are not the exclusive harbingers of the proper deliver of chi. In fact, probably the most rapidly growing and popular method of cultivating chi is Feng Shui, an ancient art that centers on the placement of objects surrounding the individual.

Feng Shui has become so popular that reasonably priced mini-fountains are now turning up in department stores. While it is nice to see these items being promoted, they are truly of no value to anyone who does not understand what the practice embraces. When one lacks such understanding, then these items are little more than flowery ornaments. So, here is a little background on the science: Feng Shui literally means "wind-water" and the name derives from a passage in the ancient Chinese Book of Burial which states: "Chi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water." On a baseline level, Feng Shui believes that the energy drawn from heaven and earth can be properly harnessed through the placement of external objects in a room, dwelling area or the workplace.

Through the proper placement of particular Feng Shui-related items in one's home, for example, you create the environment and ability to develop positive energy. This, of course, leads to a better development of internal chi and greater well being and vitality.

How To Artify Your Home

Would you like to make your house feel more like a home? Is it comfortable enough, but not really special? If so, I have some easy 'arty' tips to make your environment that bit more special.

Before you start making any alterations, or adding anything, you need to clean and declutter. This helps you to see rooms more clearly and what space you have to utilise. When this is done you can start to improve your surroundings.

Use enticing aromas. How much nicer it is to enter a room with a lovely aroma than one with the usual household smells such as pet odour, cooking smells or stale smoke. Certain scents have the power to promote clarity of mind and positive thoughts. Start using scented candles, incense or aromatherapy oils or sprays regularly.

Hang beautiful artwork. Make your home completely unique by having original artwork on your walls. You don't have to pay thousands for gorgeous contemporary artworks. Many websites, including mine, have beautiful paintings for sale at really reasonable prices. What a talking point your original artwork will make when you have guests.

Say it with flowers. A lovely floral display not only looks fabulous but also provides a fresh smell. Try to display flowers in an nconventional way by using unique containers or putting together plants and flowers which are not usually displayed together.

Uplift with colour. If you are unsure about using bold or more vibrant colour than usual, simply paint in one wall in a room with a bold accent. This way you will get a lift without being overpowered by strong colour.

Use lighting. Either table lamps or floor lamps can create a wonderful ambience in any room. Light up dark corners for a homely glow.

Feng Shui. Try rearranging your furniture for a more peaceful and positive environment. Feng Shui is an ancient philosophy which tells us that how we arrange our home has a direct effect on our fortunes. There is plenty of information on the Internet and in books about how you can make positive changes by rearranging your furniture to promote more positive energy flow through your home. All of these easy and inexpensive tips will help you to turn your house in to a real home.

Chinese Astrology and Feng Shui – Year of the Grand Duke Rat

In Chinese astrology, there are 12 zodiac signs which are represented symbolically by 12 animal signs. These animal signs take their turn to govern a given year based on the Chinese solar calendar or Sixty Jia Zi system. Each animal sign has typical characteristic associated with the year of birth based on the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each year, one of the elements and animal signs will rule the year. The animal sign that rules the year is also given the peculiar name of Grand Duke Jupiter which is associated with the celestial bodies. In 2008, it is rule by the Grand Duke Rat and the ruling element is earth. When you combine the rat and the earth, it becomes the year of the earth rat.

Based on Chinese metaphysics or Feng Shui, a house is divided into nine grids within which there are eight sectors or directions - the center, four primary sectors/directions and four secondary sectors/directions. The four primary sectors/directions are North, South, East and West whereas the four secondary sectors/directions are NW, SE, NE and SW. The center of the house is not included in the compass directions. In 2008, the inauspicious energies known as Five Yellow, Year Breaker and Three Killings occupy the south sector. Five Yellow brings major illnesses and obstacles whereas Three Killing comprises the triple combo of negative energies associated with disaster, robbery (financial losses) and accidents. The Year Breaker is the animal sign which is opposite in direction to the Grand Duke Jupiter.

Every year, the Grand Duke Jupiter will move into a different sector in the house and the palace in which it occupies for the year will be afflicted with negative energies. These negative energies will in turn afflict the resident who resides in the sector concerned. This affliction will manifest in unlucky outcomes for the resident such as accidents, financial losses and illnesses. In order to avoid the ill effects of such affliction, the resident should keep the place undisturbed and there should not be any knocking of the wall, digging of the ground or activities that create noises and vibrations. Best of all, move away from the south sector.

In the year of the Earth Rat (2008), the Grand Duke Jupiter flies into the North sector of a house and its direction is north. If you were born in the year of the Rat, you are said to be offending the Grand Duke Jupiter of the year. What it means is that the energy in you or qi (the energy you were infused with at time of birth based on Chinese Astrology) is tuned in the same direction with the energy of the year and such an alignment of energy creates negative outcomes for the person. You will face with many setbacks and obstacles in the year relating to wealth, health and relationship. In order to avoid such bad luck, all residents in the property should not sit or sleep facing North direction, especially the resident with the animal sign of Rat. If you were born in the year of the Horse, you are said to be clashing with the Grand Duke Jupiter of the year. In other words, your energy or qi is tuned in the opposite direction against the energy of the year because the Horse manifests itself as the Year Breaker and it occupies the south sector. This will also have negative effects on you and the year ahead will be likewise stressful and problematic. The other animal signs that conflict with the Grand Duke Jupiter of the year are Goat (harmful clash) and Rabbit (destructive clash).

On the contrary, the Grand Duke Jupiter of the year can also bring positive outcome for residents who were born in the year of the Ox, Monkey and Dragon. To put it in an astrological perspective, the energy of the year combines with your energy or qi. It means that there is certain compatibility or affinity in the relationship between the Rat, the Ox, the Monkey and the Dragon. If you are one of these animal signs, the year ahead is auspicious and you will have success when it comes to people, relationship, health and wealth. However, a person will need to undertake an actual analysis of his or her natal chart in order to unravel what destiny really has in store for him or her, not only for this year but the years ahead.

The Chinese New Year Is Almost Here - Things You Need To Do For Your Best Year Ever - Pt 1

We will be ringing in the New Year on February 7th, 2008. The Chinese New Year, a very Auspicious Day for many. Every year I do a special mailing and strongly suggest to my clients that they follow the relatively simple things on the list I've provided....and every year I get the most wonderful feedback from them; they believe doing these simple and inexpensive things have helped and so do I.

Because I am adding to the list this year, I am putting this post in parts. (Believe me I've read enough posts telling me to keep it short and to the point). And I TRY-which doesn't mean I succeed. It is important to me that I relay the information correctly...

I do follow all these things myself and I do believe they help a great deal in the year we are projecting for ourselves. So I've added again to the list for this year and I will also include information for those that have a home/office as well. They generate money and clients and are very valuable rooms in our homes!

One note: I have a wide variety of clients. Most of them take the suggestions I make and do make the changes and report success. And I have other clients that literally put their heart and soul and INTENTION into each and every change, keeping in mind what they want to attract back (The law of Attraction). These are the people that report the BEST news---they and their energies are fully engaged and they are focused on what they want to achieve. For years I have been writing that ENERGY FOLLOWS INTENT. If you want the Energy to change, keep your intentions focused. Here's to the BEST 2008 for All of you!

If at all possible, pay down your credit cards and bills prior to the Chinese New Year. Try to start the year off with as little debt as possible. If we want to start a clean slate, this is one of the best ways to do so.

CLEAN. Clean out dust, clear out the cobwebs (from your home as well as your thoughts) and start the new year with a different environment. The very act of cleaning helps to energize your surroundings!

At the risk of repeating myself (over and over again) it does mean clear out that clutter. Remember the rule of clutter: If you don't need it, use it or LOVE it, get rid of it. Pass it along to someone who will be very grateful to have it.

Make some changes. They could be changes in your routine, changes in your thoughts or physical changes. New Years and New Beginnings mean a new way of doing things, disregarding things that aren't working for us and incorporating or trying new things that may. It's time to be truly open to change to allow the new energy IN.

Fruit to Feng Shui Consultants signifies Abundance....Abundance in ALL areas. Put a bowl of fruit out on your kitchen and/or dining room tables to signify the abundance that is sure to follow. You can eat them the day after New Years, not before!

Add fresh flowers. They not only are pure "Chi" (Energy) but they actually can help change the energy in a space with the use of colors that signify elements as well...make sure you get a few red flowers in the bunch. Some people put them in one room; some put a small bunch in many rooms. (Last year I bought quite a few, they gave my home a lovely feeling).

Sweep the kitchen floor as close to midnight as possible. It symbolizes letting go of the old and putting it right outside.

If you are home on the New Year, burn a candle. Blow it out as close to Midnight as possible with your wishes and Intentions for the New Year in place. Celebrate this night as if it were a birthday.

Finally, open the doors and windows as close to midnight or at midnight if possible. We are welcoming in not only a New Year but also new hope and new beginnings!

These things don't take very long and don't cost much money at all but it's a wonderful way to start any new year and let go of the previous year, particularly if you had struggles or difficulties. Now that you've cleaned out your home, let go of old thoughts that no longer benefit you. We need room for all the new, wonderful energy that you are attracting!

More things to do for the New Year. I know, believe me, you don't want to hear it (and I don't blame you) but it's especially important this year and I'll tell you why.

This is the year of the RAT. It is the FIRST in the twelve cycles of the zodiac that make up Chinese Astrology. Because it is the first, this is a year of plentiful opportunities and prospects for anyone, no matter what sign you are! That's some great news for all of us.

It is a wonderful year for starting new projects and making long term investments. So even from a Feng Shui point of view, it's a wonderful year for purchasing that new home; great news to share with your buyers isn't it?

In Western Astrology the Rat is a Sagittarian which means all of us can expect the unexpected---in an unusually good form. Some famous people that have been born under the Year of the Rat include Claude Monet, George Washington, William Shakespeare, Mozart, Truman Capote and Irving Berlin. Pretty impressive list, don't you think?

So NOW what am I asking you to do? Well, this is what I do; I want to insure a year as wonderful as my last one!

* Try to resolve any disagreements you might have with someone. It helps YOU release and resolve for the positive changes to occur.

* I always ask my clients that no matter how difficult life may be to remember all the things they are truly blessed with. Make a list which infuses the blessings you already have with more, doubling its energy.

* The Chinese respect money. For women, clean out your handbags, keep your money in your wallet in order. Remember NOT to ignore signs of Abundance! If you see a penny and think it's nothing, think again. To many of us it is a sign of pure Abundance; if you pass the things you perceive as small, the larger ones won't appear!

* Some people have asked about the Red Envelopes. While there are many facets to the use of them, one is during the Chinese New Year. They are primarily given to children and must contain money. They are considered as Auspicious to the Giver as well as to the Receiver. Red Envelopes containing Money can also be placed the in the Wealth Area of your home. (Red Envelopes are becoming so popular that many of the branches of New York's Citibanks now carry them)! They do NOT have to be Chinese Red Envelopes if you can't find them, OfficeMax carries regular Red Envelopes.

* Replace any light bulbs that have burned out. Light can help intensify the other changes.

* Remember to open all your blinds and curtains in the morning and close them at night. Letting the "Outside IN" creates a Yin/Yang balance of the two energies of day and night. You are starting your New Year with BALANCE.

* Light all four burners on your stove for a few minutes. In the Black Sect method, this signifies and enhances money. The stove nourishes your body and the burners signify nourishing your wealth.

* This is a wonderful time to Smudge your home. For those of you unfamiliar with this, it is smudging...much like Native Americans do for healing; Feng Shui Consultants can use sage and walk through your home with it burning, while being mindful of all the things you'd like to come into your life. It helps to re-energize a space and rid it of any negativity over the last year. (I have found that pure Sage is best).

Now, go have your best year EVER :)

Simple Solutions When You Just Cant Shift Your Clutter

I'm so thrilled with the five awesome financial wins I've had over the last 3 weeks. In fact they have totaled over $3,000 Aussie dollars ($2,644.00 US) which is a combination of money being saved very unexpectedly and cash.

Better still I know it's all to do with my focus of detoxing and simplifying my life. I've gently gone through cupboards, draws and secret spaces added a good dose of bravery and eliminated allot of stuff which doesn't support who I am today. I've simplified most of my bills and a few crazy habits that I made complex like shopping for food.

The more I eliminate and the more I simplify the energy around me and in my home the more blessings and opportunities open up for me.

I have personally witnessed stunning changes to literally hundreds of peoples lives when they eliminated, eliminated and eliminated some more all the stuff around them. Most started out very slowly due to the strong emotions they had attached to their things but finished with clutter cleverness after three or four months. Yeah!

Nine simple solutions to over come your clearing clutter obstacles:

Find one or two proven solutions which speak to you from the list below then let your clutter be afraid, be very afraid.

1. Be gentle on yourself as there is absolutely no rush:

A home overcrowded with stuff creates foggy thinking which can prevent you from starting. Lighten your load by knowing it is not a race, there is no rush and you can't make a mistake. Just keep saying to yourself "I gently remove clutter at my own pace".

Think gently and never think of all the clutter in your entire home all at once. Only focus on one very small space at a time.

Think and feel gentle by calming and relaxing your breath. Long, slow deep breathes will oxygenate your body and relax your mind. Keep repeating " I gently remove clutter at my own pace"

2. If you need more inspiration to get started then read this book:

I can personally guarantee that there is not one person who has read the following book who has not then been able to tackle their clutter with enthusiasm. The book is very simple and easy to read and called Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui and written by Karen Kingston.

3. Focus on only one small space at a time:

Start small.You are not climbing Mount Everest. Focus on one draw a week until you have finished all the draws in your home. Nothing more and nothing less.

Spend 1% of your day which is 15 minutes emptying out the contents and making brave choices about what to keep, throw out or give away. Once you have completed all the draws in the house then you can progress to shelves, under the beds and cupboards. Just focus your attention on one small space at a time. I've also provided a list below giving you links to freecycle web sites just in case you are not sure who to give your good stuff to.

4. Do it with a close friend:

Your friends are not attached to your stuff. They will have your best interest at heart and can easily talk you out of keeping too much unnecessary stuff. I know for a fact this solution has worked extremely well for many people.

5. Do it to fabulous music:

Find yourself the most fabulous happy uplifting piece of music that you absolutely love and play it loud. The music stops your resisting thoughts getting the better of you, uplifts your spirits and allows you to throw out more easily. Listen to some uplifting Bobby McFerrin "Don't worry be happy". I actually bought this CD and its such fun to play when doing the housework or to shift the kids moods. An all time classic.

6. Find your groove:

My groove is early in the morning when my thinking is not distributed and distracted easily. Yours might be late at night when everyone is asleep. Clear your clutter when you have the most energy and focus.

7. Sometimes its better just not to involve the kids and other family members:

If I left the decisions up to my kids they would never throw out any of their old toys out. Going through my kids cupboards is much, much, much easier when they are not around. Keep in mind though it might be easier (for you personally) having them around if they are happy to give their old clothes and toys to people who will be thrilled to get them.

8. Take some flower essences to shift your internal resistance:
If you are open or into vibrational remedies then flower essences taken a few days before you want to start clearing your clutter can the most perfect solution.

Clearing the internal emotional resistance with a few drops of flower essences can be an easy and gentle way to dissolve your attachment to your things. Clearing clutter is now only a bottle away.

I love and have studied with Ian White the founder of the Australian bush flower essences. I personally use bottle brush whose energetic properties are all about letting go. There is also a few blends which may appeal to you such as "abundance essence" and "purifying essence". If you live in Australia they can easily be bought in good health food store. If you live in America I have personally used and love Alaskan essences.
